To ensure the color of the meat remained fresh, Soutine famously kept a slaughtered cow hanging in his studio for several weeks. When the smell became unbearable and neighbors complained, he would periodically douse the carcass with buckets of fresh blood to maintain its vibrant, visceral appearance. This obsession with the macabre and the material reality of his subjects was a hallmark of his intense, turbulent style.
