This work is the first in a series of ten altarpieces, part of a larger project called 'The Paintings for the Temple' created by the artist. It features a central golden orb and a stepped pyramid rising from a deep black background.

Hilma af Klint was a pioneer of abstract art who created her most radical works years before Kandinsky or Mondrian, yet she kept them largely hidden from the public eye during her lifetime. She believed that her paintings were guided by spiritual entities she called the 'High Masters,' and she left instructions in her will that her work should not be shown until twenty years after her death.
