Hilma af Klint was a pioneer of abstract art, creating complex, symbolic works years before her male contemporaries like Kandinsky or Mondrian. Her art was deeply influenced by her involvement with the Theosophical and Anthroposophical movements, and she often believed she was guided by higher spiritual beings during the creative process. Because she felt the world was not yet ready for her radical visions, she left instructions that her thousands of works not be shown until twenty years after her death.
