Hilma af Klint was a pioneer of abstract art who created her most famous works years before Kandinsky, Mondrian, and Malevich. She believed she was guided by spiritual spirits to create her 'Paintings for the Temple,' a massive project intended to be housed in a spiral-shaped shrine. Because she felt the world was not yet ready for her radical, occult-infused abstractions, she requested that her works remain hidden from the public until at least twenty years after her death.
