According to Greek mythology, Zeus's mother Rhea hid him in a cave on Crete to protect him from his father Cronus, who was notorious for devouring his children. During his infancy, Zeus was famously nursed by the goat Amalthea, and was guarded by the Kouretes who would clash their spears and shields to drown out his cries, preventing Cronus from discovering his location. Jordaens' depiction captures this mythical moment, often including satyrs and nymphs involved in his care.
