This painting is one of the many oil sketches Rubens produced for Philip IV of Spain to decorate the Torre de la Parada, a hunting lodge outside Madrid. The artist used a reduced, almost monochrome palette, which allowed him to focus on the energetic composition and the subtle interaction between the characters before delegating the final large-scale canvases to his workshop assistants.
