About this artwork

This large panel painting depicts the biblical Adoration of the Magi, prominently featuring portraits of the Medici family and other notable Florentine citizens of the era. It was commissioned by Gaspare di Zanobi del Lama for his funeral chapel in Santa Maria Novella.

Did you know?

This particular "Adoration of the Magi" is celebrated for its inclusion of the powerful Medici family, who were Botticelli's patrons. Cosimo de' Medici, who had died eleven years prior, is depicted as the kneeling eldest king, while his sons Piero and Giovanni are the other two Magi. Botticelli himself appears in the crowd on the far right, gazing out at the viewer, making it a fascinating blend of religious narrative and contemporary portraiture.
