About this artwork

This tempera on panel painting illustrates the mythological Judgement of Paris, a pivotal event that led to the Trojan War. Paris, a Trojan prince disguised as a shepherd, is depicted in a pastoral landscape, tasked with choosing the most beautiful goddess.

Did you know?

According to Greek mythology, the Judgement of Paris was the catalyst for the Trojan War. Eris, the goddess of discord, threw a golden apple inscribed "To the fairest" among the goddesses, leading to a dispute between Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. Paris, chosen to arbitrate, ultimately awarded the apple to Aphrodite, who promised him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen of Sparta, thus setting in motion a tragic chain of events.
