About this artwork

This painting is the first of a series of four panels illustrating a tale from Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron. It depicts Nastagio degli Onesti's initial encounter with the spectral hunt in the pine forest of Ravenna.

Did you know?

The story of Nastagio degli Onesti, from Boccaccio's Decameron, tells of a young man who, heartbroken, retreats to a pine forest. There, he witnesses a spectral hunt where a knight eternally pursues and brutally kills a nude woman, only for her to be resurrected and the chase to begin anew. This gruesome spectacle, a punishment for the woman's cruelty in rejecting the knight's love, inspires Nastagio to stage a similar dinner scene, ultimately leading to his own beloved agreeing to marry him out of fear of a similar fate.
