About this artwork

This grand Baroque painting depicts Alexander the Great, in military attire, being presented with sacred scrolls by the high priest Jaddus within the richly adorned Temple of Jerusalem, surrounded by other figures and soldiers.

Did you know?

According to ancient accounts, when Alexander the Great approached Jerusalem, the high priest Jaddus met him outside the city. Jaddus showed Alexander prophecies in the Book of Daniel that were interpreted as foretelling Alexander's conquests. Believing himself to be the prophesied king, Alexander spared Jerusalem and offered sacrifices in the Temple, a significant event highlighting the interplay between historical and religious narratives.
