About this artwork
The Cantino planisphere is the earliest surviving nautical chart depicting Portuguese discoveries in the east and west, created by an anonymous cartographer in Lisbon.
Did you know?
This map was famously stolen from the Portuguese by Alberto Cantino, an agent of the Duke of Ferrara, who bribed a cartographer to copy the Portuguese King's secret master map. It is the first map to show the Brazilian coast and provided critical, though quickly outdated, geographical intelligence for the era of exploration.
