1890 Van Gogh Museum

This painting depicts a close-up, almost abstract view of gnarled tree roots and trunks on a hillside, executed with thick, expressive brushstrokes. It is widely considered to be one of Van Gogh's last works, created shortly before his death.
Did you know?
Tree Roots is famously believed to be one of the last paintings Vincent van Gogh completed before his death in July 1890. The frenetic energy and fragmented forms have often been interpreted as a reflection of his agitated state of mind during his final days in Auvers-sur-Oise. The site of this painting was identified in 2020 near the Auberge Ravoux, where Van Gogh resided.
