Winslow Homer, famous for his dramatic seascapes, found a new source of inspiration when he visited Florida in the winter of 1885-1886. The brilliant light and lush, exotic scenery of the South inspired him to move away from the muted tones of his earlier work and embrace a brighter, more spontaneous approach to watercolor. This series of paintings remains one of the most celebrated depictions of the American tropical landscape from the late 19th century.
