During the summer of 1879, Winslow Homer spent time in Houghton Farm, New York, where he focused on capturing the simplicity of rural life. This series of works featuring children at play or work reflects a shift in his interest toward more pastoral, gentle subjects, moving away from the dramatic maritime scenes he became famous for. The use of tinted paper with white gouache highlights was a technique Homer frequently employed to create atmospheric depth in his sketches.
