Armand Guillaumin was a key figure in the Impressionist movement and a close friend of Paul Cézanne and Camille Pissarro. Interestingly, he was able to dedicate his full attention to painting only after winning a significant prize in the French national lottery in 1891, the same year this work was created, which allowed him to quit his job as a municipal clerk.
