Armand Guillaumin was a quintessential member of the Impressionist circle, known for his bold, intense use of color that often anticipated the Fauvist movement. Unlike many of his contemporaries who relied on familial wealth, Guillaumin worked for the French state railways to support his painting, famously quitting his job only after winning a significant prize in the municipal lottery in 1891. This financial freedom allowed him to dedicate his later years entirely to his vibrant landscapes, such as this study of trees.
