While painting this series, Pissarro was suffering from an eye infection that made it painful to work outdoors, so he rented rooms in Parisian hotels to paint the city views from his window. This allowed him to observe the ever-changing light and bustling urban life of Paris while remaining sheltered from the elements and the public gaze. His work from this series remains one of the most vivid records of the rapid transformation of Haussmann's Paris at the turn of the century.
