About this artwork

This oil painting is one of a series of Poplars paintings created by Claude Monet, depicting the same trees at different times of day or in various seasons. The series was painted in the autumn of 1891 near Limetz, France.

Did you know?

Monet's 'Poplars' series, to which 'The Four Trees' belongs, was a deliberate exploration of how light transformed the same subject at different moments. Legend has it that to prevent the trees from being sold and cut down before he finished his series, Monet purchased them himself, only to sell them back to the lumber merchant after he had completed his artistic studies.
