Interestingly, this painting was produced during the Peninsular War while Goya was based in Spain. The Duke of Wellington was notoriously difficult to paint, and it is said that he and Goya did not get along well, with Goya reportedly attempting to strike the Duke at one point after the Duke criticized his work.
