About this artwork

This is one of the 'Black Paintings' created by Francisco Goya directly onto the walls of his home, the Quinta del Sordo, between 1819 and 1823. The work was later transferred to canvas and is now held in the collection of the Museo del Prado.

Did you know?

This painting is one of the famous 'Black Paintings', a series of dark, unsettling works that Goya painted on the interior walls of his farmhouse in his final years. He never intended for these deeply personal and haunting images to be seen by the public, as they were likely an expression of his own internal mental and physical struggles. The intense, almost claustrophobic focus on the figures highlights Goya's shift from his earlier courtly style to a more raw and expressionistic form of art.
