Saturn Devouring His Son
c. 1819-1823 Museo del Prado
About this artwork
This work is one of the 'Black Paintings' that Goya painted directly onto the walls of his house, 'Quinta del Sordo', in his final years. It was later transferred to canvas and donated to the Museo del Prado.
Did you know?
Goya created this disturbing mural in his dining room without any intention for public display. It serves as a haunting psychological exploration of the myth of Saturn, who consumed his children to prevent a prophecy that they would overthrow him. The raw, desperate execution reflects Goya's declining mental and physical health in his final years.
