About this artwork

This portrait depicts a young woman in a white blouse holding a large bouquet of peonies behind an arrangement of various spring flowers. It is one of the final works completed by the artist before his death in the Franco-Prussian War.

Did you know?

Frédéric Bazille painted this work in 1870, the same year he enlisted in the French army at the start of the Franco-Prussian War. Sadly, he was killed in action only a few months later at the age of 28, making this piece a poignant final chapter in his short but impactful career.
