Family Reunion
1867 Musée d'Orsay
About this artwork
This large-scale oil painting depicts members of the artist's family gathered on a terrace at their estate in Castelnau-le-Lez. It is considered one of the defining works of early Impressionism for its masterful handling of natural light.
Did you know?
Bazille painted this work as a deliberate attempt to capture the atmosphere of a summer day in the south of France, juxtaposing his family's formal middle-class status with the relaxed, sun-drenched setting. Tragically, he would be killed in action during the Franco-Prussian War only three years later, making this a poignant record of his family life just before his promising career was cut short.
