Henri Rousseau, a self-taught toll collector who painted in his spare time, created this work to celebrate the centenary of the French First Republic. Despite the 'naive' and dreamlike quality of his work, Rousseau was deeply proud of his art and often displayed it in the annual Salon des Indépendants, where it was frequently met with both mockery and quiet admiration from avant-garde masters like Picasso.
