About this artwork

This large-scale oil on canvas depicts a nude woman reclining on a divan amidst a lush, fantastical jungle setting. It is one of Rousseau's final works and serves as the culmination of his jungle-themed series.

Did you know?

Henri Rousseau, a self-taught tax collector who painted during his spare time, never actually left France to visit a jungle; he drew his inspiration from visits to the Jardin des Plantes in Paris and illustrated botanical books. This painting is famously surreal, featuring a woman magically lounging on a couch in the middle of a dense, dangerous rainforest as if it were a parlor. The work was finished just months before his death and represents his most ambitious composition.
