Recollection of Mortefontaine
1864 Department of Paintings of the Louvre
About this artwork
This masterpiece of the Barbizon school captures the quiet, misty atmosphere of the lake at Mortefontaine near Paris. It was purchased by the French state directly from the artist for the Musée du Luxembourg, before being moved to the Louvre.
Did you know?
Corot painted this work at the height of his career, when he had become famous for his lyrical, 'souvenir' style landscapes. The painting was so admired by the public and critics for its dreamlike quality that Napoleon III himself purchased it for the state collection shortly after it was exhibited at the 1864 Salon.
