Sargent was famously known for his grand society portraits, but he frequently created smaller, spontaneous studies of animals and landscapes during his travels. This calf, painted during a stay in Broadway, England, shows his mastery of capturing light and form even in the humblest of subjects. Interestingly, there is a playful inscription visible in the upper register of the painting that reads, 'Mr Mead with a merry Xmas,' suggesting it may have been a thoughtful gift for a friend or patron.
