Although he was famous for his jungle paintings, Henri Rousseau never actually left France or visited a tropical jungle during his lifetime. He drew inspiration for his exotic scenes from frequent visits to the botanical gardens and natural history museums in Paris, as well as illustrated books and children's adventure magazines. The painting was poorly received by critics when it was first exhibited, but it eventually helped solidify his reputation as a master of the Naïve style.
