This oil on canvas painting consists of geometric shapes defined by black lines, arranged at 45-degree angles against the standard horizontal and vertical grid of Neoplasticism. It is a hallmark example of Van Doesburg's Elementarism, which sought to introduce dynamic tension into the rigid structures of De Stijl.

Theo van Doesburg famously introduced the diagonal into his work to challenge the strict vertical and horizontal orthodoxy promoted by Piet Mondrian.
