c. 1725
About this artwork
A formal portrait of Catherine Opalińska, Queen of Poland, depicted in an elaborate court gown with a fur-lined cape and jewels, standing beside a draped table with a royal crown.
Did you know?
Catherine Opalińska was the wife of Stanisław Leszczyński, who briefly ruled as King of Poland. After losing the Polish throne, Stanisław became Duke of Lorraine, and Catherine's daughter, Marie Leszczyńska, married King Louis XV of France, making Catherine the mother-in-law of the King of France. This unexpected turn of events gave her family immense European influence, despite their initial loss of a kingdom.
