About this artwork

A portrait of a young woman with her eyes closed, captured in a serene moment of repose. The subject is depicted wearing a red headscarf and a white ruffled collar.

Did you know?

Pietro Rotari was highly celebrated in his time for his 'heads of character' or 'testes di fantasia', series of expressive, idealized heads that captured various moods and expressions. He eventually became the court painter to Empress Elizabeth of Russia, where he produced hundreds of these intimate, small-scale portraits. These works were incredibly popular among the aristocracy and were often displayed together in specially designed 'cabinets' of paintings.
