About this artwork

This detailed plate, numbered 'PLATE 60', depicts two Carbonated Warblers (Sylvia Carbonata) perched on a branch of a Service Tree (Prunus Pensylvanica) laden with red berries and green leaves. It was drawn from nature and published by John J. Audubon, and engraved by W. Howell for R. Havell Son in London.

Did you know?

The Carbonated Warbler, beautifully depicted here by Audubon, is one of the most enigmatic birds in ornithological history. It was described from only two specimens collected in Kentucky in the early 19th century, and since then, no verifiable sightings have occurred. Many ornithologists now believe it may have been a hybrid or an extremely rare variant, making Audubon's illustration a crucial historical record of a bird that vanished into mystery.
