About this artwork
An allegorical figure, likely representing Fortitude, is depicted holding a sword in her right hand and a sphere in her left, standing against a gold-colored background. This work is characteristic of Early Renaissance allegorical representations.
Did you know?
Lo Scheggia, born Antonio di ser Cione di Sandro, was the younger brother of the renowned Early Renaissance master, Masaccio. While Masaccio revolutionized painting with his understanding of perspective and human form, Lo Scheggia developed a more decorative and narrative style, often working on cassone panels and other domestic furnishings. This 'Fortezza' might have been part of a series illustrating virtues, designed to adorn the interiors of affluent Florentine homes.
