About this artwork
This monumental work, known as 'Le Travail', depicts a rustic scene of labor and communal life in an idealized, classical landscape. It was created as a large-scale mural project that emphasizes physical exertion and the foundational aspects of human endeavor.
Did you know?
Puvis de Chavannes originally intended this painting as a monumental mural, and it is a masterpiece of his mature, flat, and decorative style that significantly influenced modernists like Gauguin and Picasso. The painting is deeply rooted in 19th-century French mural tradition, aiming to celebrate the dignity of labor through a deliberately timeless and monumental composition that strips away specific historical markers.
