Portrait of Doctor Felix Rey
1889 Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts
About this artwork
This is a vibrant portrait of Dr. Félix Rey, who attended to Van Gogh at the hospital in Arles. The artist gifted the painting to Dr. Rey, though it's said the doctor did not particularly like it.
Did you know?
Vincent van Gogh painted this portrait of Dr. Félix Rey in gratitude for the medical care he received after self-mutilating his ear. Ironically, Dr. Rey reportedly disliked the painting so much that he used it to patch a hole in his chicken coop, eventually trading it for a bottle of wine. Today, it stands as a celebrated example of Van Gogh's distinctive portraiture.
