The Pietà (after Delacroix)
1889 Van Gogh Museum
About this artwork
This painting is Van Gogh's interpretation of Eugène Delacroix's "Pietà," a scene depicting the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus Christ. Van Gogh made several copies of other artists' works during his stay at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
Did you know?
Vincent van Gogh's decision to copy other masters, like Delacroix, was a therapeutic practice during his time in the asylum at Saint-Rémy. He saw copying as a form of translation, allowing him to absorb and re-imagine the original work through his unique artistic lens, making it intensely personal and distinctive even while paying homage.
