Portrait of the Duke of Wellington
1812 National Gallery
About this artwork
A portrait of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, depicting him in his military regalia and decorations. This work was painted by Francisco Goya following the Duke's victory at the Battle of the Arapiles.
Did you know?
Goya painted this portrait of the Duke of Wellington after the Duke's successful campaign in the Peninsular War against Napoleon's forces. Interestingly, Goya actually painted over an earlier portrait of a Spanish official to save on canvas materials, a common practice for artists of his time. X-ray analysis has confirmed the presence of the original, hidden portrait beneath the surface of the Duke's jacket.
