circa 1754 National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.
About this artwork
This large-scale oil painting depicts the cavernous nave of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, rendered with precise architectural perspective. Panini was celebrated for his detailed vedute (view paintings) of Roman monuments and interiors during the 18th century.
Did you know?
Giovanni Paolo Panini was one of the most successful painters of Roman views in the 18th century and became a favorite of the Grand Tourists who flocked to Rome. His ability to capture the immense scale of St. Peter's Basilica helped to cement the image of Rome as a destination of incomparable grandeur for European travelers. Interestingly, he often adjusted the proportions of buildings in his paintings to achieve a more harmonious composition rather than a purely documentary record.
