Interior of the Pantheon, Rome
circa 1734 National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.
About this artwork
This large-scale oil painting captures a precise and atmospheric view of the interior of the Roman Pantheon, featuring its coffered dome and oculus. Panini was celebrated for his meticulous vedute, or views, of Roman architecture.
Did you know?
Giovanni Paolo Panini was a master of the veduta genre and his paintings were highly sought after by wealthy travelers on the Grand Tour who wanted to bring a piece of Rome home with them. Interestingly, while the Pantheon's interior remains largely unchanged today, Panini often adjusted the scale of the figures and the intensity of the light to create a more idealized and awe-inspiring atmosphere than one might experience in person.
