About this artwork
This landscape depicts the coastal town of Collioure in southern France, captured with the characteristic bold, non-naturalistic color palette of the Fauve movement. Matisse painted this during his time spent in the Mediterranean village, which heavily influenced his color theory.
Did you know?
During the summer of 1905, Henri Matisse and André Derain moved to Collioure, a small fishing port on the Mediterranean coast. Their work here was so radical in its use of arbitrary, explosive color that a critic famously dubbed them 'les fauves' or 'wild beasts' at the 1905 Salon d'Automne, inadvertently giving birth to the Fauvism movement.
