Mrs. Newton with a Child by a Pool
c. 1879
About this artwork
This Impressionist oil painting depicts Kathleen Newton, James Tissot's muse, lounging on a patterned blanket by a dark body of water, cradling a baby. She extends her hand towards something unseen in the upper left, possibly a playful gesture or pointing something out to the child.
Did you know?
Kathleen Newton was James Tissot's beloved muse and companion, featuring prominently in many of his works during the late 1870s and early 1880s. Tragically, she died young of tuberculosis, leading Tissot to largely abandon his fashionable London career and return to Paris, eventually turning to religious subjects. This painting captures a tender, intimate moment with her child, reflecting a more personal side of Tissot's art during this period.
