Did you know?
John Singer Sargent is most famous for his sophisticated society portraits, but during the latter part of his career, he frequently retreated to the countryside to paint landscapes and genre scenes for his own pleasure. This work demonstrates his mastery of 'plein air' painting, where he used swift, confident brushwork to capture the fleeting effects of light on the water's surface. Interestingly, the model for this piece is believed to be his niece, Rose-Marie Ormond, who appeared in several of his later sketches and paintings.
