John Singer Sargent was commissioned by the British War Memorials Committee to document the horrors of the First World War. When he visited the Western Front, he was deeply struck by the sight of soldiers blinded by mustard gas, leading him to create this poignant series of studies which eventually culminated in the massive, haunting canvas depicting a line of blinded men.
