This tempera and oil painting on wood panel depicts the Archangel Gabriel approaching the Virgin Mary to announce she will bear the Son of God. It is widely considered one of Leonardo's earliest major commissions, showcasing his early mastery of atmospheric perspective.

While long attributed solely to Leonardo, modern scholarship suggests it was a collaborative effort involving his master, Andrea del Verrocchio. A notable quirk is the anatomical 'error' in Mary's right arm, which appears disproportionately long when viewed from certain angles, possibly an intentional distortion meant to compensate for the viewer's perspective looking up from below.
